In October 2014 Facebook announced that it had been awarded more than $2bn (£1.3bn) in legal judgements against scammers selling fake likes.
We’ve all had the emails promising thousands of Likes being added to our businesses Facebook page. In fact many will have felt a little twinge and asked themselves ‘Should I give it a go? I’m always being told how important ‘Likes’ are in social media marketing. It’s not very expensive and what’s the worst that could happen?’
Here’s the answer - in a recent blog, Facebook said: "We have a strong incentive to aggressively get rid of fake likes because businesses and people who use our platform want real connections and results, not fakes."
This is Facebook saying that the best way to stop all these fake Likes is to penalise the ranking of Facebook pages of the businesses who buy them. This is very similar to the war on spam being fought with increasing success by Google. So be warned!
